What is GHK-Cu?

GHK-Cu is the tripeptide glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine bound to a copper(II) ion. Loren Pickart first isolated GHK from human plasma in 1973, and levels in plasma are reported to fall with age.

It binds copper tightly and is studied for wound healing, collagen production and skin repair. It’s also one of the most common actives in copper peptide skin care.

GHK-Cu research so far

Maquart and colleagues reported in 1988 that GHK-Cu stimulated collagen synthesis in cultured fibroblasts, and later rat wound-chamber studies found more collagen and glycosaminoglycan buildup.

Gene expression work by Pickart and colleagues suggests GHK can shift the activity of a large number of human genes, many tied to tissue repair and the antioxidant response.

The biology behind GHK-Cu

GHK binds copper tightly and can deliver it to cells. Copper is a cofactor for lysyl oxidase, the enzyme that cross-links collagen and elastin, and for antioxidant enzymes.

In cell and animal studies GHK-Cu increased collagen and glycosaminoglycan production, attracted repair cells to wounds, and changed the activity of many genes involved in tissue remodeling.

How to mix GHK-Cu 50mg

With 50mg in the vial, common water volumes work out like this:

  • 2mL of water: 25mg per mL
  • 3mL of water: 16.67mg per mL
  • 5mL of water: 10mg per mL

Use sterile bacteriostatic water and add it slowly, aiming at the glass instead of the powder. A gentle swirl is all it needs.

Before mixing, keep it at -20°C and out of the light. After mixing, the fridge at 2 to 8°C, and use it within about four weeks.

Planning a study with GHK-Cu 50mg

Work out the total amount the protocol needs first, then add about 20% for test runs and the odd lost dose. Ordering everything from one lot keeps the material consistent through the whole study.

Other GHK-Cu amounts

Same compound, different amounts. The bigger listing works out cheaper per milligram. The 200mg listing is topical-grade powder for cosmetic formulation, while the 50mg vial is freeze-dried for reconstitution.

GHK-Cu compared with similar peptides

GHK-Cu is the copper-binding tripeptide studied for collagen and skin repair. The compounds it’s usually weighed against:

  • BPC-157 is the 15-amino-acid repair peptide with the largest body of rodent research
  • TB-500 is the 43-amino-acid actin-binding protein, studied for cell movement and wound repair
  • KPV is a three-amino-acid alpha-MSH fragment studied for calming inflammation
  • ARA-290 is an 11-amino-acid peptide from erythropoietin that protects tissue without raising red cells
  • B7-33 is a relaxin-2 fragment studied for fibrosis

Each covers a different step of repair, from new blood vessels and cell movement to inflammation, fibrosis and matrix rebuilding. All of them are on our BPC-157 and recovery peptides page.
