VIP at a glance
Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) is a 28-amino-acid neuropeptide found in the gut, brain and immune system. It relaxes smooth muscle, widens blood vessels and has anti-inflammatory effects.
It belongs to the glucagon/secretin family.
What studies report about VIP
VIP was first isolated by Said and Mutt in 1970. Delgado and colleagues later reported it reduced inflammation in mouse arthritis models.
An inhaled form, aviptadil, has been tested in lung disease.
Search the original papers yourself on PubMed.
How VIP works
VIP works through two receptors, VPAC1 and VPAC2, which raise cyclic AMP inside cells. In smooth muscle that means relaxation, so blood vessels widen and the gut and airways loosen.
On immune cells, VIP turns down inflammatory cytokines like TNF-alpha and IL-6 and pushes T cells toward a regulatory profile. That’s the basis for its study in arthritis, lung and gut inflammation.

Reconstituting VIP 6mg
The concentration is the 6mg in the vial divided by the water you add:
- 1mL of water: 6mg per mL
- 2mL of water: 3mg per mL
- 3mL of water: 2mg per mL
Use sterile bacteriostatic water and add it slowly, aiming at the glass instead of the powder. A gentle swirl is all it needs.
Store sealed vials in the freezer. Once you’ve added water, keep the vial at 2 to 8°C and plan to finish it within roughly a month.
Ordering enough VIP 6mg
Work out the total amount the protocol needs first, then add about 20% for test runs and the odd lost dose. Ordering everything from one lot keeps the material consistent through the whole study.
VIP vs related compounds
In short, VIP is a 28-amino-acid neuropeptide that relaxes smooth muscle and calms immune cells. Here’s how its neighbors differ:
- Thymosin Alpha-1 is a 28-amino-acid thymic peptide, approved in several countries as thymalfasin
- LL-37 is the only human cathelicidin, an antimicrobial peptide that also signals in wound repair
- Thymalin is a thymus peptide complex from the Leningrad bioregulator program
- PNC-27 is a p53-derived peptide that binds HDM-2 on cancer cell membranes
All are immune research tools, but they act at very different points, from T cell maturation to direct antimicrobial action. All of them are on our immune peptides page.
Often ordered with VIP 6mg
- Thymalin 25mg, a thymic peptide complex
- Vilon 20mg, a dipeptide bioregulator
- KPV 4mg, an alpha-MSH tripeptide
- Thymosin Alpha-1 10mg, a thymic peptide
The full range is on the research peptides page. For this research area, go to immune peptides.
